Firth & Scott Insurance Brokers Ltd was established by Mr Firth in 1964 to provide mortgages and insurance to his fellow farmers from offices in Bonnington Chambers, Arnold. The 'Scott' name derived from an inspector with a local insurance company who was keen to join the business - he used his wife's maiden name of Scott. In the end he did not join Mr Firth but the name remains.
In 1967 Mr Firth decided to sell the business to his colleagues Peter Goff and Paul Reed.
Peter Goff was a life & pensions expert and Paul Reed specialised in general insurance. The company needed another individual who was familiar with both these aspects of the business and in 1969 Derek Allwright was invited to join the firm as a Director to provide valuable cover in both areas.
1970 saw the business move to 106 Front Street, Arnold with a second office opening at 579 Mansfield Road, Sherwood in 1972.
In 1982 Peter Goff the Managing Director retired and Steve Hopkins, a fellow expert in life & pensions joined the firm as his replacement, with Derek Allwright taking over the role of Managing Director.
In 1986 Justin Hevness joined the company as a Trainee Insurance Broker and since then has worked his way up the ladder to become Managing Director of the Insurance Broking company in January 2005.
In 1988 Firth & Scott Financial Services Ltd was formed, with Steve Phillips joining the new company as a Director. Steve joined us from Norwich Union bringing to the company his lengthy experience in the life & pensions field.
The businesses grew steadily and 1994 saw the insurance brokerage join Broker Network Ltd. This national network of insurance brokers provides greater purchasing power for high street brokerages, enabling Firth & Scott to offer competitive premiums and enhanced policy wordings. At the same time Steve Hopkins took over the mantle of Managing Director of both companies.
A decision was made in 1999 to close the Arnold office and transfer all of the business to 579 Mansfield Road, Sherwood to improve the quality of service that both companies could offer to our numerous clients.
Steve Allwright (Derek's son) joined the insurance broking company in 2002, bringing with him his experience of working with the Zurich as a Commercial Underwriter and eleven years as a Loss Adjuster with Crawford & Company.
The year 2005 saw both Paul Reed and Derek Allwright retire, with Steve Allwright taking over the role of servicing both Paul and Derek's clients.
In 2008 the Financial Services company obtained the prestigious title of 'Chartered Financial Planners' which is only awarded to companies who are willing to commit to the Chartered Insurance Institute's Code of Ethics and who meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability. The Insurance Broking company followed the example of the Financial Services company in 2011.
Both companies are therefore able and ready to provide and maintain the professional, personal and most importantly friendly service that our existing clients have experienced and expect from Firth & Scott.
We hope to offer our services for the next 40 years and look forward to the 50th anniversary of Firth & Scott Insurance Brokers Ltd in a few years time.
