Our Story

The story of Firth & Scott so far

Firth & Scott Insurance Brokers Ltd was established by Mr Firth in 1964 to provide mortgages and insurance to his fellow farmers from offices in Bonnington Chambers, Arnold.

The ‘Scott’ name derived from an inspector with a local insurance company who was keen to join the business – he used his wife’s maiden name of Scott.  In the end he did not join Mr Firth but the name remains.

In 1967, Mr Firth sold his business to his colleagues Peter Goff, a life and pension’s expert, and Paul Reed who specialised in general insurance.  The company needed another individual who was familiar with both these aspects of the business and in 1969 Derek Allwright was invited to join the firm as a Director to provide valuable expertise in both areas.

The business moved to 106 Front Street, Arnold, Nottingham in 1970 with a second office opening at 579 Mansfield Road, Sherwood, Nottingham in 1972.

In 1982 Peter Goff the Managing Director retired and Steve Hopkins, a fellow expert in life and pensions joined the firm as his replacement, with Derek Allwright taking over the role of Managing Director.

The businesses grew steadily and in 1994, Firth & Scott became one of the founding members of Broker Network, a national network of insurance brokers which provides greater purchasing power for high street brokerages. This enabled Firth & Scott to offer competitive premiums and enhanced policy wordings.

Derek Allwright’s son Steve joined the insurance broking company in 2002, bringing with him his experience of working with the Zurich as a Commercial Underwriter and 11 years as a Loss Adjuster with Crawford & Company. He took over both Paul and Derek’s clients in 2005 when they both retired.

The third generation of the Allwright family, Derek’s granddaughter, Stevie Jeffrey, joined the business in 2011. Also in 2011 Firth & Scott Insurance Brokers obtained the prestigious title of ‘Chartered Insurance Brokers’ which is only awarded to companies who are willing to commit to the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Code of Ethics and who meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability.

We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2014 and hope to offer our services for the next 50 years.

In 2016, with her extensive insurance knowledge, and several industry awards, Stevie Jeffrey joined the board of Directors at the company.

In October 2017 we moved offices to our prestigious address of 38 Thackeray’s Lane, after years of searching for the right premises and a major refit over many months.  These premises are more suited to how our business is developing and allows us to grow and push the company forward, whilst maintaining our high standards of professionalism and service.

In 2021, Stevie achieved Chartered Insurance Broker status by completing her ACII studies.
